The snow from the big storm has shifted eastward from coastal New England to across Nova Scotia, but the plowing and shoveling continues from this record event.
Winds continue to gradually subside across eastern New England and the eastern Mid-Atlantic.
Accumulations topped 20 inches in parts of 10 states: southeast Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Long Island in southeast New York, New Jersey, southern Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and western North Carolina. This storm rewrote some of the record books from Roanoke, Va., northeast through Long Island.
Roanoke picked up 17.8 inches of snow breaking the 24-hour record for the month of December.
Other daily December records were broken in Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Providence and Boston.
In Washington 16.4 inches of snow fell making 2009 the snowiest December on record.
The 23.2 inches of snow that fell on Saturday in Philadelphia made December 19, 2009 the second snowiest day on record. The snowiest day on record in Philadelphia is January 7, 1996 when 27.6 inches fell. Also, Philadelphia has already beaten its average snowfall for the entire winter season of 19.3 inches.
On Long Island, Upton measured 26.3 inches making this the biggest snowstorm on record.
Watch this coming week for another big storm. The heavy snow will be in the Midwest this time but parts of the Northeast could be in for a nasty transition from snow to sleet to freezing rain and rain by Christmas Eve into Christmas Day. |

While the Mid-Atlantic region is digging out from The Winter Powerhouse they should also keep an eye on the next storm that could be moving in on them Tuesday.
That next storm actually forms out of two separate systems that impact the northern and southern Plains tonight and Monday.
The northern system brings a long period of mainly light snow to the eastern Plains and upper Mississippi Valley through late Monday night and Tuesday morning. There could be a wide swath of 6 to 10 inch accumulations with some high amounts of 12 to 14 inches by the time the storm ends.
Snow from the northern system spreads into the lower Great Lakes and Ohio Valley Monday afternoon through Tuesday.
The southern system moves out of the New Mexico Rockies tonight and through the southern Plains Monday.
Accumulating snow should extend from southern Colorado and northern New Mexico through the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles through northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas to western Missouri through Monday night.
The heaviest accumulations should occur in the southern Rockies where 10 to 15 inches are possible. To the east the amounts should run 2 to 6 inches in the lower elevations and up to 12 inches in the Ozarks.
By Tuesday the northern and southern systems combine and head toward the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. |

Energy Department Will Make Revisions to Its Monthly Report on Output
The Energy Department is preparing to make sweeping revisions to its U.S. natural-gas production data after finding it has been overstating output, raising new questions about the government's collection of energy information.
The monthly gas-production data, known as the 914 report, is used by the industry and analysts as a guide for everything from making capital investments to predicting future natural-gas prices and stock recommendations.
But the Energy Information Administration, the statistical unit of the Energy Department, has uncovered a fundamental problem in the way it collects the data from producers across the country -- it surveys only large producers and extrapolates its findings across the industry. That means it doesn't reflect swings in production from hundreds of smaller producers.
The EIA plans to change its methodology this month, resulting in "significant" downward revisions in some areas, according to Gary Long, the acting director of the 914 form, who led the review. |
